How to check your car
- Find the car’s date of first registration on the V5C log book, or on DVLA’s free vehicle enquiry service.
- Find when the plate’s identifier started in the year chart.
- If the car was first registered on or after that date, the plate can go on it.
Other things that can stop a transfer
Age is the rule people most often trip over, but it isn’t the only one. The vehicle also has to be registered with DVLA and able to be taxed and MOT’d where needed. Q plates can’t be transferred at all. DVLA’s private number plate guidance has the full conditions.

Common questions
Can I put a newer plate on an older car?
No. A plate can’t make a vehicle look newer than it is. A 67 plate can’t go on a car first registered in, say, 2015.
Can I put an older plate on a newer car?
Yes. A 2024 car can wear a 51 plate, an S reg, or a dateless plate. That’s why private plates can make cars look older, never newer.
What plates can go on any car?
Dateless plates (no year identifier), including Northern Ireland registrations, can go on a vehicle of any age.
Which date counts: when the car was made or when it was registered?
The date of first registration, as shown on the V5C log book. Compare it with the date the plate’s identifier started.
